Whether I like to admit it or not, I truly do love my hometown, Miami.
Living in a different city, furthermore, a real American city has truly opened my eyes to how unique Miami really is. All of us 305-ers have a special bond, something that sets us apart from the next person or any other city kids.
Nothing is more frustrating, though, than the stereotypes I hear on a regular basis:
"Oh you're from Miami? So you speak Mexican?"
"Do you live on a boat and go to the beach everyday?"
And also, there isn't salsa music blasting as we roam the streets.
Hence why I write this post...
Magic City Memoirs is an independent film directed and written by Aaron Salgado and J.D. Freixas respectively. The film uses Miami as it's backdrop for the plot and follows the life of three best-friends as they are upon graduating from their private high-school. Must emphasize the private school part, private and public schools in Miami are like alternate universes to each other. Growing up in this city is what I'd like to equate to the "fast life". Constant partying and growing up reeeeal fast in the bubble.
Here's a synopsis:
In Miami, three lifelong friends, months away from high school graduation indulge in reckless behavior that finds them on the brink of either their graduation or their mortality. These three friends are from very different backgrounds. Mikey Acosta is a star high school baseball prospect, while Angel is a whiz of a student as well as the son of a prominent Miami politician. Stok is the son of an incarcerated drug lord. These three best friends attempt to navigate through their senior year amongst the pressures and temptations of the city.
Sounds juuuust like my high school days. The trailer was recently released. I think it will be pretty good, mostly because it looks legit with a the storyline to back it up. Not exactly sure when it will be released.

Style > Looks
My picky-ness in certain aspects of life has proven to be a perpetual problem, a disease of some sort. For example, when walking the streets and I see a lad come my way, I notice first not what he looks like, but rather what he is wearing. At times I may be looking at their faces first, but this action is quickly 'checked and balanced' by what his apparel is. If he is wearing running sneakers with jeans, adios papo. I am essentially shallow in my own way.
For me, style resonates with all other things that lead to good taste. If he dresses well, he certainly keeps up with anything closely related to entertainment, fashion, art, media, pop-culture, and the likes.
Exhibit A: I was in Georgetown hanging out with visitors and nons, all who were male, and they wanted to check out this store called Major. The store is a boutique that specializes in sneaker and streetwear with brands like Nike, Nike Sportswear, The Hundreds, Converse, etc etc... The guy who worked there, by any other means, was not my type, at all. However, I checked out his dark wash Levi's, cool sneakers, and hipster glasses, and I was pulled in. Plus, he was cool and dare I say, had "swag".
Exhibit B: Yesterday in my PR Writing class, we had guest speakers. Although he opened his mouth and was questionably gay, which is cool, I found him to be attractive because of his cream cable-knit sweater, oxfords, and jeans. Not to mention scruff, I dig the scruff.

This album might be one of my favorites from Mr. West. I never wrote about it before but he pretty much takes all the styles from College Dropout to 808s & Heartbreak and puts it into one album

NYFW - Day 8
Parting is such sweet sorrow...
New York Fashion Week has finally come to an end folks. While we have thoroughly enjoyed gawking with envy over many collections on the runways, it's time to go back to reality.
Some designers from day 8 were Ralph Lauren, L.A.M.B., Calvin Klien Collection, L'Wren Scott, Bill Blass, and Stephen Burrows.
A quick recap from the past week:

And on the 7th day the fashion gods said
LET THERE BE PROENZA SCHOULER!
Jack McCoullough and Lazaro Hernandez, the two designers of Proenza, certainly know the way to my heart. Their fall 2011 collection has also shown the indian/tribal vibe we're getting for this upcoming season, and we totes dig it. They've done the tribal thing before, but this season the colors are much more different which were said to be inspired by a road trip they took to New Mexico.
Alls I know is that I see a lot of pants and a lot of jackets, and I can deal with that.
Most definitely in my top 5 this season...

NYFW - Day 7
Almost thereeeee peeps!
Some really big names for day 7!
One of the standouts for me personally for day 7 was 3.1 Phillip Lim. Along with Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang, I also get really excited for Phillip Lim's collection. A lot of the stuff is extremely wearable and translates well into everyday chic power-bitch clothing.
Day 7 saw the likes of others such as Jeremy Scott who had a really fun/ interesting collection, as per usual. Not quite sure if I would wear anything, unless I lived in a comic book.
Other huge names for the day were Elie Tahari, Milly, Nanette Lepore, Michael Kors, Oscar de la Renta, Anna Sui, and our beloved Proenza Schouler, which will surely have it's own post just like Marc...

The King of NYFW
We're almost at the end people. Who is sick of these fashion posts? Well if you are, sorry but I told ya I would cover every single day. (I feel bad for myself, as well!)
The King of fashion week, as I like to think of him, showed both of his collections early this week. Who else would I be talking about other than Marc Jacobs!
Every season, Marc's collections are the ones I am most excited for, he never disappoints. So much so that I've dedicated a whole post solely on his collections! Jealous everyone?
For Marc by Marc Jacobs, the designer went with a 40s theme. Crap, how did he know the 40s, along with the 20s, was our favorite time period? Furthermore, he was still able to showcase this 40s look with his consistent retro edge seen in all Marc by MJ collections. It was a very sophisticated collection for what appears to be the target age group of 18-25 year olds.

Not only is she dating metrosexual hot beast star soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, but she is Sports Illustrated's 2011 Swimsuit Issue cover model. The unveiling of the SI Swimsuit issue cover model is like the holy grail for dudes. We can equate it to our version of the Vogue September issue, or whatever.
Just a reminder that Spring Break is around the corner.
Operation starvation, commence.

It would only make sense Valentine's Day, or single awareness day, would fall during Fashion Week. For more reasons than one. One being designers get to showcase their love and art, but more so for us women who depend on our closets to satisfy the emptiness.
That aside, Day 5 brought upon a lot of BBM Heart eyes face when viewing big name collections like Alice + Olivia, Carolina Herrera, Tracy Reese, and Monique Lhullier.
Howevaaaa...it was one small name that really tug at our heart strings. I have to admit I have never heard of Sachin + Babi, and I'm heartbroken I did. (get it? sick of the v-day puns yet?) Buckled pants? Sign me up.

This weekend DC had it's International Wine & Food Festival and yours truly was able to attend. (At this moment I'd like to thank and acknowledge my parents for whoring their daughters out to their friends with connections.)
I went to the Festival with my amiga Stef, and my did we have a blast. We had a little trouble getting in at first but next thing you know we were VIP. It's a rough life, I tell ya. Alas, sooo many booths of WINE and food spanning throughout the Ronald Reagan International Trade Center, a wine-o's dream.
I am no wine expert. Surely, I know the difference between a Merlot and a Cabernet, (or do I?) but spending a day meeting new and interesting people and lying about my pseudo-legitimacy was a helluva good time. Also, I drank for free. Doesn't get any better than that. I also met Carla Hall from Top Chef and Top Chef All-Stars, she was great!
Point is, dear readers, change up your weekend afternoons and go do something new and exciting! We are getting older, and this is the kind of shit we should be doing.
Can't wait til next year!

NYFW - Day 2
Sorry folks, I know I'm behind but what can I say, I guess I actually do have a life.

Friday Feb 11th marked day 2 of New York Fashion Week, and favorites like Rag & Bone, Rebecca Taylor, Jason Wu, Cynthia Rowley, Rebecca Minkoff as well as Steven Alan and Jeremy Laing were all present.
Has my affinity for black and grey gotten you depressed? Well, looks like blue is the color for Fall 2011. So I guess we'll be sticking to colors with depressing connotations. Yipee! In any case, I was surprised to see how Rag and Bone, for example, incorporated Blue into their collection that started off with winter whites and grey and plaid. Friday Feb 11th marked day 2 of New York Fashion Week, and favorites like Rag & Bone, Rebecca Taylor, Jason Wu, Cynthia Rowley, Rebecca Minkoff as well as Steven Alan and Jeremy Laing were all present.
Has my affinity for black and grey gotten you depressed? Well, looks like blue is the color for Fall 2011. So I guess we'll be sticking to colors with depressing connotations. Yipee! In any case, I was surprised to see how Rag and Bone, for example, incorporated Blue into their collection that started off with winter whites and grey and plaid.
